Spanish FM visits Gaza, meets with UNRWA official

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo become the third EU Minister to visit Gaza since Operation Protective Edge this summer, going there Monday as part of a regional tour .

The foreign ministers of Denmark and Malta visited the region last year. Garcia-Margallo entered through the Erez Crossing.

Garcia-Margallo, who as part of EU policy did not meet Hamas representatives, met instead with g UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl. The Spanish Foreign Minister said he wanted to “convey Spain’s solidarity with the people in Gaza at this very challenging moment. It is our intention to continue supporting Palestine refugees and UNRWA.”

The Spanish foreign minister is scheduled to meet separately on Wednesday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman. On January 1 Spain began a two-year stint on the the UN Security Council.
