Spanish government 'condemns firing of rockets against Israel' from Gaza

Spain condemned Hamas's firing of rockets into Israel and made a "firm" appeal to Palestinian factions to stop the "hostile" actions, recognizing Israel's right to defend itself in a statement released Saturday.

"The government of Spain welcomes the efforts of the UN and Egypt to put an end to the dangerous escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip in recent days," the country's foreign ministry said in the statement.

The statement also called on Israel to use restraint in its response and avoid civilian deaths, reaffirming its commitment to a two-state solution as the only long-term answer to the conflict.
