State launches scholarship program dedicated to Arab students

The Council for Higher education announced on Tuesday the launch of a scholarship program dedicated to undergraduate Arab students aimed at increasing the number of Arab students in fields where their presence is relatively low.
The program, a joint initiative of the CHE with the Prime Minister’s office’s Economic Development Authority for the Arab sector, the Lottery and several philanthropic funds from abroad, will award 650 scholarships in the amount of NIS 10,000 each, for each year of study, starting in the current academic year.
Students’ eligibility will be determined according to socioeconomic criteria and the area of study. In total, the program is expected to grant some NIS 300 million over the next six years.
Chairman of the Council for Higher Education Prof. Manuel Trachtenberg stated that the initiative is based on the belief that “it is of crucial importance that all populations of society will be represented in higher education.”
According to  data  provided by the CHE, Arab students in Israel tend to come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds than their Jewish counterparts. In addition, the Council explained that the number scholarships and loans available to them in order to finance their studies and living expenses remain significantly lower than for Jewish students.
