Supreme Court rejects Benizri's request to postpone his imprisonment

The Supreme Court on Sunday rejected a request by former cabinet minister and Shas MK Shlomo Benizri to postpone his imprisonment until October 18. Benizri will therefore start serving his sentence on September 1. In his request, Benizri wrote that he wants to complete medical examinations before he begins his prison term, and asked to be able to spend the High Holidays with his family. The judges wrote in their decision that Benizri had sufficient time to complete any examination he felt was necessary, and therefore, there was no justification to postpone his imprisonment. Benizri has been sentenced to four years in prison for accepting bribes, fraud, breach of trust and obstruction of justice.
