Border Police stopped a suspect with a knife near the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron on Sunday, Israeli police reported.
The suspect is being held for questioning.
Initial investigations indicate that the suspect came to the Cave of the Patriarchs with the intent to commit a terrorist attack.

Attacks in the area of the Cave of the Patriarchs were common around January 2020 after MK Naftali Bennett announced funding for a new Jewish neighborhood in Hebron with multiple attacks and attempted attacks in the span of a few months.

A controversial tender was issued in July to install an elevator at the historic site. The plan was promoted by Bennett, Defense Minister Benny Gantz and right-wing politicians.

The project is opposed by NGOs and Palestinians from Hebron, who have filed objections with the Civil Administration.
