TA police chief: Don't put mayors in charge of municipal police

Tel Aviv Police Cmdr. Shahar Ayalon warned against placing municipal police forces under the control of mayor, adding that such a move would open the door for corruption to seep into the police force. Instead, Ayalon said, police should remain under the centralized command of the Israel Police. Ayalon was speaking at the Ninth World Summit on Global Terrorism, which is being held at the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Herzliya. "The national police has the fairness to avoid corruption. We are not influenced by local politics, because the budget is derived from the government," Ayalon said.
