Tennis: Pe’er finally gets past first round in Poland

Shahar Pe’er claimed her first WTA Tour main draw victory of 2014 on Monday, advancing to the second round of the Katowice Open in Poland with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Petra Martic.
Pe’er, ranked No. 90 in the world, will next face the winner of Tuesday’s first round match between Andrea Hlavackova and Tsvetana Pironkova in what will be just her second appearance in a second round of a WTA Tour event since last August.
In other tennis news, Israel’s Davis Cup team will not be seeded in Tuesday’s World Group playoff draw to be held in London. Israel will be playing in the playoffs for a fifth consecutive year after completing a 3-1 road victory over Slovenia in the second round of Europe/Africa Zone Group I on Sunday.
Rafael Nadal’s Spain (tie will be played at home), Novak Djokovic’s Serbia (away) and the USA (home) are among the national team’s potential opponents. Other options include: Belgium (home), Argentina (home), Canada (away) and Croatia and Australia (an additional draw will be required to determine the host). The playoffs will be held over the weekend of September 12-14.
