Trump praises legal immigrants, vows strict border control for illegal ones

US President Donald Trump praised legal immigrants as citizens who "strengthen our society," but warned that the "lawless state of our southern border is a threat." He called for US Congress "to show the world that we are dedicated to end illegal immigration and put the human traffickers out of business."
Trump also charged that Mexico was seeking to purge illegal immigrants from other South and Central American nations that breached their borders by sending them to the American border. He detailed crime, drugs and prostitution brought in to the US by illegal immigrants.
The president introduced a relative of a family murdered by an illegal immigrant. He also introduced a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who himself immigrated to the US with his family as a child. "Walls save lives," he said, pushing for his controversial plan to create a border wall along the southern border with Mexico.
