UK gov't: Iran could have nuclear weapon by 2012

LONDON — Britain's defense secretary said it's possible that Iran could develop a nuclear weapon by next year.
Liam Fox told lawmakers on Monday he disagrees with Israel's newly retired spy chief, Meir Dagan, who said this month that Iran would not be able to build a nuclear bomb before 2015.
Fox said the West has been caught out before, notably by North Korea, when it had been overly optimistic.
He said it is unclear exactly when Iran might be capable of producing a nuclear weapon, but that Tehran "may be on the 2012 end of that spectrum."
He said the international community should act on the basis of the most pessimistic assessment.
