"My vision for the country is to eliminate the idea of the periphery," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a crowd gathered to witness the signing of an umbrella agreement to construct 32,000 housing units in Ashkelon.
"I want to bring everything into one vibrant block," he said.
"Ashkelon will be a great city of at least a quarter million people in twelve years and it's not only possible, its something that will be realized before our eyes," Netanyahu predicted.
The umbrella agreement also included the building of three new highway junctions and an advanced public transportation system.
The signing event was also attended by Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, Construction Minister Yoav Galant and the mayor of Ashkelon, Itamar Shimoni.
