UN fired 16 staffers in past year

The United Nations has fired 16 staffers in the past year for fraud, theft, sexual exploitation, assault and distributing pornographic material, according to a UN report circulated Tuesday. The report to more than 38,000 UN staff members worldwide said six other staff members were dismissed on the recommendation of a Joint Disciplinary Committee. Disciplinary action was taken against nearly 30 other staffers ranging from written censure to demotions and fines, the report said. Three staff members who were arrested and charged by local authorities for using illegal drugs were censured. The UN said it is reviewing possible actions against a staff member who pleaded guilty to possessing and smuggling child pornography. The report by Undersecretary-General for Management Angela Kane, which covers the period from July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009, does not identify the staffers or the locations where the offenses took place.
