UN Syria envoy urges action plan in embattled country

The UN envoy on for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, briefed the United Nations Security Council on Friday following a 40-day-long tour in the region.
He proposed an "action plan" of implementing some "incremental freeze zones", local cease-fires where political process could be started at a local level. He mentioned the city of Aleppo, a place "of iconic value", as an obvious candidate.
"The idea is to take this horrific, horrible trigger that Daesh/ISIS has been producing in the region and in Syria as a trigger for actually moving forward on what could be some actions on the ground for those who agree that terrorism, which is Daesh is to be stopped," de Mistura told reporters at the UN, referring to Islamic State with their colloquially known name of Daesh.
