Unemployment rate rises

Israeli unemployment has risen by 1.7 percent since July, Israel Radio reported Monday, with the number of unemployed standing at 237,000. In August, 15,000 employees were laid off - slightly less than in July - but the number of new job seekers was 23,000. Israel Radio quoted Yossi Farhi, CEO of the Israeli Employment Service, as saying that the data indicated the economy's budding recovery, as the number of employees fired in August was lower than that at the beginning of the year.
