UN's Ban says more dialogue needed in Mideast, welcomes accord with Turkey

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon applauded the Israeli-Turkish rapprochement agreement on Tuesday, saying before meeting Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem that the region needed more "dialogue."

Ban commended Netanyahu for his leadership in making the accord possible. He will meet the families of the two IDF soldiers whose bodies are being held by Hamas, as well as the family of Mengistu.

Netanyahu thanked the UN chief for meeting with the families, and urged him to do what he could to bring about their release. He slammed Hamas as a genocidal organization that wants to wipe a member of the UN off the map.

Ban is in the country for two days, likely the last time before leaving office at the end of the year. This is the 11th time he has been here over the last decade, as many times as he visited his home country of South Korea.
