U.S. Ambassador Haley: Myanmar reporters conviction is a 'terrible stain'

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said on Monday that Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were convicted "for doing their jobs" and that them being sentenced to seven years in prison is a "terrible stain on the Burmese government."
The two reporters were
investigating the actions taken against the Rohingya people in Rakhine state in Myanmar when they were charged with breaking the Official Secrets Act, which dates back to the colonial era, by possessing state documents.
Reuters Editor-in-Chief Stephen J. Adler said the two reporters had been convicted “without any evidence of wrongdoing and in the face of compelling evidence of a police set-up.”
The verdict, he said, was “a major step backward in Myanmar’s transition to democracy.”
