The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, is scheduled to visit Israel next week, a defense source said Sunday. He is expected to arrive as a guest of IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz and meet with Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon.
Dempsey’s visit comes weeks after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu sent a warning signal to the international community over Iran’s nuclear program, telling CBS News in July that despite the election of a new president, Tehran was “closer and closer to the bomb.”
During his visit, Dempsey and Israeli officials will likely address top-priority issues including Iran, developments in the Syrian civil war and the situation in Egypt.
The day of Dempsey’s arrival has not been finalized yet, though he will probably land next Monday.
