US, France discuss compensation for victims of French rail deportations during Holocaust

The US and France have begun negotiations on compensating the victims of deportations from France by railways to Nazi labor and death camps during the Holocaust.

The sides were also discussing compensation to the family members of victims.

"It is our mutual aim to conclude these talks as quickly as possible," US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement Wednesday.

She urged US lawmakers to cease initiatives that "undermine" the ongoing negotiations, pointing toward legislators in states such as New York and Maryland who Psaki said "have begun to pose a serious obstacle" to reaching a deal.

"The current American-French dialogue, in our view, represents the best means of reaching an agreement that will meet the concerns expressed by lawmakers in these states," she said.
