US military leader chides China over N. Korea crisis

TOKYO — The top US military chief is turning up pressure on China over the military crisis on the Korean peninsula, saying Beijing has failed to take effective action even though it has more influence over North Korea than any other government.
Adm. Mike Mullen, on a brief stopover in Tokyo on Thursday, said it is imperative China do more to lead North Korea away from escalating the threat of an all-out war. The North attacked a South Korean island with artillery two weeks ago, killing four people, and it is blamed for the deadly sinking of a South Korean warship in March.Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said: "China must lead and guide North Korea to a better future."
