US proposes UN resolution on non-proliferation ahead of nuclear meeting

While the US is concerned about the nuclear ambitions of North Korea and Iran, the special UN session to be chaired by US President Barack Obama later this month will seek broad consensus on preventing the spread of nuclear weapons rather than zeroing in on individual nations. US Ambassador Susan Rice said Wednesday that "the session will focus on nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear disarmament broadly, and not on any particular countries." She said the United States was consulting with the 14 other members of the Security Council about the contents of a possible statement or resolution to be issued at the end of the high-level meeting on nuclear issues, to be held September 24 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly's annual ministerial session.
