Villagers, aid workers flee violence in northwest Myanmar

Myanmar's government has evacuated at least 4,000 non-Muslim villagers amid ongoing clashes in northwestern Rakhine state, the government said on Sunday, while thousands of Rohingya Muslims fled across the border to Bangladesh.

Fighting involving the military and hundreds of Rohingya across northwestern Rakhine continued on Saturday with the fiercest clashes taking place on the outskirts of the major town of Maungdaw, according to residents and the government.

Dozens of international aid workers from various organisation who were stationed in Maungdaw were seen leaving Buthiduang, a township that is near to villages in conflict zones, for Rakhine state's capital Sittwe on Sunday as the situation is worsened.

The death toll from the violence that erupted on Friday with coordinated attacks by Rohingya insurgents has climbed to 104, the vast majority militants, plus 12 members of security forces and several civilians, according to a Reuters tally based on official releases.

The government said it was investigating whether members of international aid groups had been involved in an alleged siege by the insurgents of a village in Rakhine.
