White House adviser consulted Israeli officials on Iran deal

President Barack Obama'snational security adviser Susan Rice played host to a series ofmeetings with Israeli officials last week to try to gain theirsupport for an interim deal with Iran aimed at containingTehran's nuclear program.

The meetings, announced in a White House statement onSunday, arose from talks between President Barack Obama andIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month as theUnited States tried to persuade a skeptical Israel to supportthe Iran deal.

Israel doubts whether Iran will actually give up a nuclearprogram that the West believes is aimed at developing a nuclearweapon.

The interim deal, achieved in Geneva last month between Iranand major world powers, halts Iran's nuclear program in exchangefor modest sanctions relief. Over the next six months theparties are to attempt to negotiate a comprehensive solution toIran's nuclear challenge.
