WHO declares Israel polio free

A senior World Health Organization official declared in Haifa on Wednesday for the first time that Israel is free of polio. Dr. Susanna Jacob, the secretary-general of the WHO’s European division of which Israel is a member, said that there is no more wild or any other type of polio in the country.
Nearly two years ago, wild polio virus was found in the sewage in various parts of the country, especially the south. No one was infected however. The situation made headlines around the world.
On advice from the WHO, the Health Ministry reinstituted the oral polio vaccine that it had halted years before, thinking that it had been eradicated.
