Wife of gunman denies "hate crime"; parking spat cited

Karen Hicks, wife of Craig Stephen Hicks who is accused of shooting three Muslim students near the University of North Carolina campus, says her husband treated people "as equal."

"We were married for seven years and that is one thing that I do know about him -- he often champions on his facebook page for the rights of many individuals. For same-sex marriages, abortion, race..." Hicks said.

The shootings "are not part of a targeted campaign against Muslims," US Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina Ripley Rand told reporters on Wednesday.

Craig Stephen Hicks, a 46-year-old white man who had posted anti-religious messages on Facebook, was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the shootings on Tuesday.
