Women uninformed about heart attacks, new study says

The majority of secular and ultra-Orthodox (haredi) women – and even more of Arab women – are ignorant of the fact that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, according to a survey of over 1,000 carried out by Dr. Donna Zfat, head of the new women’s heart health center at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem.
Many mistakenly thought that breast cancer kills the most. In addition, only 34 percent of Jewish women and 26% of Arab women knew that symptoms of heart attacks in women are different in women than in men.
While 54% of Jewish women said they would call an ambulance immediately if another person showed signs of a heart attack, only 20.6% of the Arab women said so. More than 5,500 Israeli women die of heart attacks each year, Zfat said.
