‘Billing errors total close to NIS 1b. each year’

Poll shows around 40% of Israeli consumers don’t check their telephone and utilities bills, mainly because they don’t understand what appears on them.

Billing errors detected by Israelis are worth close to NIS 1 billion each year, according to new figures released by the Israel Consumer Council.
The council, a non-profit organization that works to defend consumers and protect their rights, last week launched its “Check your bills” campaign to coincide with World Consumer Rights Day, which was held last Tuesday.
According to the results of a poll conducted by the council together with the Geocartography research institute, around 40 percent of Israeli consumers don’t check their telephone and utilities bills, mainly because they don’t understand what appears on them. Some 65% of the consumers who do check their bills have discovered mistakes, the poll found.
To help educate the public, the council has posted on its website a guide to reading electricity, gas, water, cable, municipal tax and phone bills. Original bills are displayed in each category, with commentary and explanation available for each section by moving the mouse over it.
In addition to public advertising, the “Check your bills” campaign will send team members to universities, work places and to cities around the country to remind members of the public that they should always check their bills.
