Neo-Nazi suspected in stabbing of German police chief

Security officials in southern Germany on Sunday said they suspect a neo-Nazi was behind a weekend knife attack on the chief of police in the city of Passau who is known for taking a hard line against the far-right.
Bavarian interior ministry spokesman Oliver Platzer said Passau Alois Mannichl suffered stab wounds after he was attacked in his home late Saturday. He said the 52-year-old police chief told investigators the attacker wished him greetings from "the national resistance," a slogan used by far-right extremists in Germany.
Platzer said Mannichl successfully underwent surgery and was recovering on Sunday.
