A 19-year-old Jericho man was killed in clashes with the IDF south of Hebron early Tuesday morning, according to Palestinian medical sources.
The Bethlehem-based Ma'an News Agency quoted Palestinian sources as saying that an IDF jeep intentionally ran over the Palestinian man, Moataz Idris al-Sharawneh.
The IDF stated that during a security operation in Dura, southwest of Hebron, Palestinians attacked soldiers with rocks and launched a disturbance in the area. The IDF responded with riot dispersal means.
"They then began climbing a military vehicle," a military spokesperson told Reuters. "The security forces warned the suspects and used riot dispersal means. Finally, with no other option, they responded with fire at one of the suspects and the incident is currently being investigated."
Ma'an reported that in the aftermath of the incident, the IDF had increased its presence in the area, setting up a number of checkpoints.
"Sharawneh was killed though he did nothing wrong," Hebron governor Kamel Hamid told Palestinian radio. "We hold the occupation authorities responsible for what has happened and what might happen as a result."
