Rape Crisis Centers: Shalom should not be able to run for president

The Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel plans to fight any attempt by Energy and Water Minister Silvan Shalom to run for president, it announced Sunday.
The organization’s director-general, Orit Soliciano, said “the fact that the complaint submitted against Silvan Shalom [for sexual harassment] did not lead to criminal charges and the fact that other women who had information did not dare complain is not enough to allow him to run for president.”
According to Soliciano, the test of criminal law is not the only way to judge whether someone is appropriate for the position.
“In a healthy society, we must look at the moral side, even if a crime isn’t proven,” she added.
Soliciano called for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and MKs to be extra careful when choosing a president, because Israel already had one who went to prison for rape; and to elect a president who is clean of any suspicion.
No female MKs came out against Shalom running, not even MK Michal Rosin (Meretz), former director-general of The Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel.
However, several said they would not comment on Shalom’s candidacy until it is official.
