The sale of anti-cold and -cough medications for children has been restricted by the Health Ministry in accordance with guidelines from the US Food and Drug Administration and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK.
The ministry said that such drugs cannot be given to children under the age of one year. Those meant for children aged one to six years will be sold only with a doctors' prescription, but they won't require a prescription for children over the age of six if given by a pharmacist. They may not be sold outside a pharmacy or given by a non-pharmacist. Limitations must be printed in leaflets sold with the drug.
The FDA has declared that such drugs are not really effective, and may be harmful to babies and preschool children.
