Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem has a new chief of surgery – Prof. Aviram Nissan – who replaces Prof. Avi Rivkind after 10 years in the job.But Rivkind, who at 64 is world-renowned for saving many lives of victims of terror attacks, accidents and other tragedies and a well-known face around the capital, will continue as director of Hadassah’s trauma unit (which he established and ran) and a senior physician in the department of general surgery.The Hadassah Medical Organization is unusual as it set a 10-year term for department heads, who must win a tender if they want to continue past that. Last year, Rivkind made news when he asked to continue beyond the decade as surgical department head after management said he would be replaced. HMO finally agreed that he would continue another year.A Hebrew University biology graduate who earned his MD degree at the Hebrew University Hadassah School of Medicine – where he now serves as associate professor of surgery – the American-born Nissan completed his internship and a residency in the surgery department at the Hadassah University Medical Center on Mount Scopus. Married and the father of two, he also did a residency in the surgical department at New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Center.Nissan served as a research fellow in the colorectal service in the surgical department of New York’s Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center and Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. Until 2011, Nissan served as attending surgeon at the Mount Scopus hospital, after which he went to the Rabin Medical Center-Beilinson Campus, where he was chief of the division of surgical oncology.
