33 dead after bus plunges into river in India

Police say a passenger bus has plunged into a river in the Indian part of Kashmir, killing at least 33 people. K. Rajindera, the inspector general of police for the state's Jammu region, says the accident occurred Wednesday near Pranoo village, some 105 miles (170 kilometers) northeast of Jammu town. Rajindera says 19 people also were injured in the accident, and that rescue operations are continuing. The bus plunged about 76 meters into the river. The cause of the accident has not been determined, but Rajindera says the 32-seater vehicle was overcrowded.
