Actor Robert Duvall, known for starring in The Godfather, died on Sunday at the age of 95, his family announced on Monday.
"Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time," his widow Luciana wrote on Facebook.
"Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort," she said.
"To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court," she eulogized.
"For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind," she wrote.
Duvall's prestigious, award-winning Hollywood career spanned decades
Duvall was born in San Diego, California, in 1931, the son of a US Navy rear-admiral and an amateur actress.
He was raised in "Christian Science" and referred to himself as a "Navy brat."
His classmates in theatre school included other famous actors such as Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, and James Caan, who also starred alongside him in The Godfather.
His career began in the theater in 1952, on television in 1959, and in film in 1962, when he was cast as Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird.
He won an Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Actor for his role in Tender Mercies (1983), and was nominated for his roles in The Godfather (1972), Apocalypse Now (1979), The Great Santini (1979), The Apostle (1997), A Civil Action (1998), and The Judge (2014).
He also won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for Broken Trail (2006), and was nominated for Emmys for his roles in Lonesome Dove (1989), Stalin (1992), and The Man Who Captured Eichmann (1996).
Duvall was childless and is survived by his widow, Luciana, whom he married in 2005.
