At least 20 Hindu pilgrims dead in northern India bus fire

A speeding bus caught fire in northern India, killing at least 20 Hindu pilgrims traveling on the vehicle, police said Tuesday. About 55 people were on the bus, said Brij Lal, a senior police officer in the state of Uttar Pradesh, adding that the death toll was expected to rise. Lal says a tire burst or a snapped axle caused sparks, which set the fuel tank alight. The bus then overturned, sliding for several hundred yards (meters) down the highway near the town of Firozabad, 125 miles (200 kilometers) southwest of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. The bus was taking pilgrims home after a visit to a Hindu religious leader.
