Austria: Jetliner turns back after windshield cracks

A Lauda Air jetliner returned to Vienna's international airport shortly after takeoff for the Canary Islands after a crack appeared in the cockpit windshield, Austrian authorities said Friday. Officials said the Boeing 737-800 was about 30 minutes into its flight from Vienna to Tenerife when the crack developed. Airline spokeswoman Pia Stradiot said the plane's captain opted to turn the plane around as a precaution. None of the 135 passengers aboard were injured. Stradiot said the jetliner landed safely back at Vienna's Schwechat International Airport around 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) Friday, and passengers were booked onto a later flight.
