Bombing wounds 9 Turkish policemen, bomber killed

A suspected suicide bomber triggered an explosion when Turkish police stopped his car near a southern city Tuesday killing himself and wounding nine policemen, the city's governor said. One of the wounded police was in critical condition, Gov. Huseyin Aksoy told reporters. "We suspect a suicide bombing," Aksoy said. "The investigation is under way." CNN-Turk television footage showed firefighters trying to put out the burning car on the outskirts of the Mediterranean port city of Mersin. The television report said police had been following the car after a tip-off. The suspected target for an attack was not immediately clear. There has been no immediate claim of responsibility. Kurdish, Islamic and leftist militants are active in Turkey.
