Britain's MoD says soldier killed in Afghanistan

Britain's Ministry of Defense said a soldier was killed during a routine patrol in Afghanistan's restive Helmand province. A statement Friday said that the soldier, a member of 6th Battalion The Rifles, died in an explosion on New Year's Day in Helmand's Garmsir district. His name has not been released, but his family has been notified. The death brings to 138 the number of British military personnel who have died while serving in Afghanistan since US-led forces invaded following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
