British soldier killed in southern Afghanistan

A British soldier was killed and another was seriously wounded Sunday in a firefight with suspected Taliban forces in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defense said. The soldiers were on a mobile patrol in the restive Helmand province, the ministry said. The injured soldier was taken to a military medical facility at Camp Bastion in Helmand, a spokeswoman said. The ministry did not identify the soldiers and said it would provide no further details of the firefight until it had contacted their relatives. More than 3,000 British troops are operating in former Taliban strongholds across southern Afghanistan, including Helmand province, as part of a NATO-led force.
