The elder daughter of former Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet requested asylum in the United States after being taken into custody at Dulles International Airport, Chilean and US officials said.
Lucia Pinochet was taken into custody by customs officials because of outstanding arrest warrant in Chile, officials said.
Chilean Interior Minister Francisco Vidal said US Ambassador Craig Kelly had informed his government of the asylum request. A State Department official confirmed the request and said she will be interviewed by an asylum officer as early as Thursday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose the information.
Lucia Pinochet, 60, was indicted by a Chilean judge on charges of tax evasion and using a false passport, Chilean and US officials said.
Chile's foreign minister, Ignacio Walker, said in Santiago that US officials reported Wednesday that Lucia Pinochet was transferred to an immigration detention center, and the Chileans could expect a decision on her request within three days.
