China said Thursday that it has effective export controls to prevent nuclear proliferation, despite a US court's decision to bring money-laundering charges against a mainland businessman accused of helping Iran's military buy materials to make nuclear weapons.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu did not directly comment on the case of Li Fang Wei, 37 - who along with his China-based company LIMMT Economic and Trade Co. Ltd. faces 118 counts of falsifying business records and conspiracy to gain access to US banks - but she defended China's export regulations.
"We exercise strict and effective export controls. Any individual or company engaged in illegal exporting activity will be seriously dealt with according to law," Jiang said at a regular briefing.
The US says LIMMT, headquartered in Dalian, China, was identified years ago as a front for Iran's nuclear acquisition efforts. Li and LIMMT are banned from doing business in the US.
