European and African countries should work to build a single highway system connecting northern and southern Africa, EU Transport Commissioner Antonio Tajani said Monday. Tajani said a trans-African transport network would boost development now hampered by Africa's scarce and poorly maintained roads. Major highways would allow goods arriving by plane and boat to move far quicker around the continent. Speaking Monday, in Tunisia's capital at a meeting of transport officials from 10 nations around the Mediterranean rim, he also said that improving life in Africa would help stem migration to Europe. Europe should help develop African infrastructure after the "errors, even horrors committed in the last century in Africa," he added.
