Explosion in Moldova rips pipeline for Russian gas

A Moldovan government department said an explosion has ripped through a pipeline carrying Russian gas to the Balkans and reduced supplies to the region. A spokeswoman says no one was injured. The emergency situations department's spokeswoman Liliana Puscasu said the 5.30 a.m blast created a crater measuring 110 square meters and was heard 10 kilometers away. The cause was not given. Puscasu said Wednesday's explosion occurred about 65 kilometers south of Chisinau and between two towns and that firefighters were trying to extinguish flames that had leapt 50 meters high.
