Heavy rains kill 22 in northern India

Heavy rains in northern India killed 22 people, police said Monday, bringing the nationwide death toll from this year's monsoon to 296. "At least 22 more people died of rain-related accidents including houses collapsing in the last 24 hours," said Surendra Srivastava, police spokesman in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state. State officials said they were evacuating residents from flimsy, unsafe houses that are vulnerable to rain damage.
