Highlights of UN Security Council Resolution 1860 passed Thursday night 14-0, with the United States abstaining:
  • "Stresses the urgency of and calls for an immediate, durable and fully respected cease-fire, leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza."
  • Calls on UN member states "to intensify efforts to provide arrangements and guarantees in Gaza in order to sustain a durable cease-fire and calm, including to prevent illicit trafficking in arms" and ensure the "sustained reopening" of border crossings.
  • Expresses "grave concern" at the escalation of violence and deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
  • Emphasizes "the need to ensure sustained and regular flow of goods and people through the Gaza crossings."
  • "Condemns all violence and hostilities directed against civilians."
  • Expresses "grave concern" at the escalation of violence and deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
  • Calls for "unimpeded" humanitarian access to Gaza and welcomes the initiative to open "humanitarian corridors."
  • Urges international efforts to provide humanitarian aid and rebuild Gaza's economy.
  • Welcomes the Egyptian initiative to arrange and implement a cease-fire as well as other regional and international efforts that are underway.
  • Encourages "tangible steps" towards reconciliation of Palestinian groups, including Egyptian and Arab League mediation.
  • Calls for urgent efforts to achieve a comprehensive Israeli-Palestinian peace in which "two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in peace."
