Indian police arrest Islamic rebel in Calcutta

Authorities in Calcutta arrested a suspected member of a Pakistan-based Kashmiri rebel group Thursday while he was trying to buy a train ticket to travel to northern parts of India, police said. Shabaz Ismail, 24, illegally entered India's West Bengal state from neighboring Bangladesh after traveling from Karachi in Pakistan, police official Rajeev Kumar said, citing officers who questioned the man. He was arrested Thursday in Calcutta, Kumar told The Associated Press. The suspect was believed to be a former Pakistan border guard who joined the rebel group Al-Badr in 2008, Kumar said. There was no independent confirmation of the claim. The Pakistan-based Al-Badr group is fighting government forces in the Indian portion of Kashmir and claimed responsibility for two grenade attacks on them earlier this month in Srinagar, the summer capital of India's Jammu-Kashmir state.Police arrest Islamic rebel in India
