A passenger train traveling to Indonesia's capital Jakarta plowed into the back of a stationary train early Saturday, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 26 others, a railway official said.
Rescue workers at the site of the crash on Java Island were checking to see if any more bodies or injured passengers remained trapped in the wreckage of the trains, which were carrying 1,000 passengers between them, said local railway official Sarni.
Officials were investigating the cause of the accident at Gubuk station, but Sarni said it appeared the moving train had time to break before it smashed into the stationary one, hence the large number of survivors.
The accident occurred just after 2 a.m. local time, said Sarni, who like many Indonesians only goes by one name.
