Mayors Haim Bibas, mayor of Modi'in Maccabim Reut; Uwe Becker, mayor of Frankfurt, Germany; and Gabriel Groisman, mayor of Bal Harbour, USA said that, “This horrific and murderous attack...serves as a brutal reminder of what antisemitism, hatred ignorance and violence look like and the destruction they cause.”
They said that “Attacks like this one do not occur in a vacuum, they are an inevitable result of divisive discourse of hatred and evil.”
These mayors came together in February 2019 to help stop hate. Other mayors in the coalition, but whose names are not signed on the recent statement, include the mayors of Frankfurt, Pittsburgh, Montevideo and Belgrade, among others.
“As mayors, it is our job as the government leaders who are closest to our people to stop hate speech and antisemitism in our own communities,” the mayors continued in their statement. “As leaders of the Coalition of Mayors Against Anti-Semitism, Extremism and Hatred, we shall not allow fear to rule the lives of our people. Our people will not surrender to terror and will continue to live our lives to the fullest. We strongly condemn this terrible act and will work to ensure that leaders in the United States of America, and from around the world, will join together to halt the expansion of hatred and violence of any kind and in any place.”
