Iran kills 4 drug smugglers, seizes opium

Iranian police have killed four drug smugglers and have confiscated more than a ton of opium, the country's state television reported Tuesday. The clash with smugglers took place near the town of Mirjaveh, about 1,500 kilometers southeast of the capital, Teheran, near the borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to the report. State television said the police seized about 1.6 metric tons (1.8 tons) of opium. The area has been the scene of frequent clashes between police and drug smugglers.
