Muslims in Berlin pray for victims of Sept. 11

Muslims in the German capital prayed Friday for peace and for the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States. Local politicians and Christian church leaders were to join several thousand Muslims at the special Friday prayers in Berlin's 40 mosques. In a gesture coordinated by the city government and Muslim Academy, the prayers were to be devoted to "peace and collective responsibility" and pay respects to the Sept. 11 victims. Riem Spielhaus, the deputy head of the Muslim Academy, said the prayers made clear "that Muslims are part of this society and understand themselves as such."
