More than 500 residents of a New Zealand city were forced from their homes overnight as a standoff continued early Friday with a gunman suspected of killing an officer in a drugs raid.
Armed police surrounded the house in the North Island city of Napier where the gunman, identified as former army reservist Jan Molenaar, 51, fired a fusillade of shots from an automatic rifle during a police drug raid early Thursday, Superintendent Sam Hoyle said.
One officer was killed in the shooting and two others were seriously wounded, along with a bystander. The dead officer's body lay beside his police car outside the house as the standoff continued more than 12 hours after the shootings, Hoyle told reporters.
Some 30 armed police had surrounded the property where the gunman was holed up. "He cannot leave," Hoyle said.
