Pakistan's army said 47 Taliban militants and three soldiers have died in the latest fighting in the northwestern Swat Valley region.
Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said Saturday that the casualties were inflicted during the previous 24 hours. He said troops were edging closer to the valley's main city of Mingora.
The government has ordered the army to clear the region after Taliban militants seized districts as little as 100 kilometers from the capital.
